The built environment is said to account for over half of global energy consumption. Energy management in homes and buildings therefore represents a major leverage point for addressing the energy and climate problems the world faces today.

Small gains in efficiency and the ability to adjust one’s energy usage patterns can have a massive impact on overall energy consumption, costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. This is driving large and growing interest in technologies and businesses that can address this space. Adding to the excitement is the fact that many solutions can be implemented largely by bringing together known and available technical capabilities.

For more information and opinions on policy, technology, and implementation of smart grids, homes and meters, please follow the links on our Clean Technology page.

But what about the “smart grid” and “smart meter” deployments? Large amounts of public and private investment, as well as extensive media coverage, have driven widespread awareness of the smart grid and smart meters, and their potential for transforming energy generation, distribution, and use. But to what extent will this really affect how people in homes and buildings use energy? Deployments of these technologies have faced challenges and criticisms relating to the

  1. Achievable rate of penetration.
  2. Lack of in-building instrumentation, connectivity, and intelligence needed for effective measurement and control (including connected smart plugs and smart appliances, in-home networking, and display and control hubs).
  3. Absence of compelling value propositions for the consumer.

 This panel discussion will explore

  1. What is required to deliver compelling consumer value propositions, and to achieve rapid roll-out and adoption of energy management solutions?
  2. Can substantial deployment occur separately from utility-led smart-meter deployments, and how can ultimate integration be ensured?
  3. What are potential business/investment models, go-to-market approaches, ecosystems and partnering strategies?
  4. What are the critical technical issues?
